Mission Statement
The Organization for Cultural Diversity in Science strives to create a close-knit community among the undergraduate students, graduate students, post-docs, and staff scientists in the sciences, with an emphasis in increasing cultural diversity at UCLA. We project a positive portrayal of underrepresented groups in the sciences to prospective high school and college students, the public at large, and also to the academic and scientific community. We aim to provide networking and outreach opportunities to our members to support them in their ultimate career goals.
Our statement regarding the recent racial inequalities plaguing America:
Across the United States, racism and police brutality have continually oppressed and killed Black community members. There has been a failure throughout the police system where those responsible for the repeated murder of black people are not held accountable for their actions. While cell-phone cameras are beginning to shed light on racist events leading to the loss of Black lives, these racial injustices have existed across American systems, including higher education, for centuries. It is our responsibility to be effective allies to the Black community, to engage in conversations about race and racism with non-Black communities, and to bring an end to racial injustices. We must acknowledge white privilege, educate ourselves to become actively anti-racist, and place our votes for local elected officials who we must hold accountable to support and protect all members of our community, regardless of race. To this end, OCDS has worked with other organizations to create a plan of action towards increasing diversity in UCLA’s Physical Sciences Division. We are actively working with the Division to create a research environment that is inclusive and equitable to all academics.
