Los Angeles Community College Days
Each quarter, OCDS hosts an all day event where a group of community college students are brought onto the UCLA campus to learn about research at UCLA and information about transferring to a bachelor's granting institution. The day begins with a session presented by the Center for Community College Partnerships (CCCP). Following this information session, research talks are given by UCLA undergraduates from the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans (SACNAS). OCDS then gives laboratory tours in the department and concludes the day with a panel of graduate and undergraduate students. In just three short years, OCDS has reached out to over 250 community college students and continues to reach out to the 22 community colleges in the Los Angeles Area.
Cal State University Seminars
Members of OCDS travel to local Cal State Universities to give an interactive lecture, often in association with a careers in chemistry lecture series. The OCDS members present their own journey to graduate school, give a brief overview of their current research project, and discuss their graduate school experience. Students ask questions about graduate studies and research and gain an understanding of what that career path would entail.
OCDS offers laboratory tours for student groups. The tours last approximately thirty minutes. Please give us at least 14 days notice and we can accommodate up to 30 students.
